Today an organization is being liquidated, which for decades has returned to these people their names and their dignity, people killed, ruined and betrayed by their own state – their fate is taken out of the archives by Memorial, and their names are read. You all know what Name Return is. To liquidate such an organization is symbolically a bad sign. Thank God, everyone is alive, so this work will continue.
Henry Reznik, member of the Presidential Human Rights Council, lawyer of the Memorial Society

The political component is present in these kinds of cases. We are not children. Let’s present the dismissal of the attorney general’s claim. It would be a miracle. In my practice, miracles have happened, but it seems to me that this is not the case, because we are not talking about the fate of a particular person.
Sergei Lagodinsky, Member of the European Parliament
This is the line under the next chapter of Russian history. The political field of the present has been cleaned up, and now the historical memory has also been cleaned up.
Valery Borshchev, co-chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group
The liquidation of International Memorial is by no means a local phenomenon: it concerns not only the organization, it concerns the entire country as a whole. Finally, the prosecutor’s office announced the main claim – there were no such claims before – Memorial creates an image of the USSR as a terrorist state. Their claim is how the organization uncovers the crimes of the Stalinist regime, how it talks about the victims of repression, about the Gulag Archipelago. That this is terrorism is obvious. Moreover, by today’s standards. But the prosecutor’s office views the USSR differently.
