“It was about half past five, people in black came to see me,” says Saakashvili’s letter, read by his lawyer Nika Gvaramia. “They said they were transferring, but did not say where.”
The ex-president demanded that his blood pressure and pulse be measured. The pressure was 180, and then 200/110. “My normal pressure is 120/80. I think it was a hypertensive crisis, – wrote Saakashvili. – I’ve never felt this way in terms of blood pressure and pulse. They tried to force me to translate, I resisted, after which I lost consciousness, I do not remember a certain segment. “
When the opposition leader came to his senses, the doctor said that he was not being transferred from the hospital.
On December 28, the Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia announced that the arrested Saakashvili was temporarily staying in the Gori military hospital. “Due to the great public interest, we inform you that on December 27 this year, after the treatment of Mikhail Saakashvili was completed, the medical staff made a decision to discharge him from the Gori military hospital,” the ministry said in a statement.
They noted that Saakashvili should have been transferred to isolation ward No. 12 in Rustavi. However, “against an emotional background, he had pressure drops,” so the transfer to prison was postponed.
Mikheil Saakashvili secretly returned to Georgia in the fall shortly before the municipal elections. This is his first visit to the country in eight years. After being detained on October 1, Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi on charges of illegal border crossing and sent to prison in Rustavi.
Immediately after the arrest, Saakashvili went on a hunger strike, which continued 50 days. During this time, his condition worsened significantly, and doctors asked to transfer the opposition leader to a civilian multidisciplinary clinic. Saakashvili himself said that he could be killed in the prison hospital. As a result, the arrested person was transported to a military hospital in Gori, where he underwent treatment under heavy guard.
In Georgia, five criminal cases were previously opened against Saakashvili, including abuse of power and embezzlement. On two of them he was found guilty in absentia. The ex-president called the sentences against himself fabricated, in particular, by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Georgian prosecutor’s office noted that Saakashvili faces at least six years in prison.
