Former employees of the association of lawyers and journalists “Team 29”, in particular, lawyers Ivan Pavlov, Evgeny Smirnov, Valeria Vetoshkina and Anton Golubev announced on the creation of a new human rights project called “First Department”, which will deal with cases related to treason and extremism.
Press secretary of the organization told “Dozhu” that in Russia lawyers will work on such cases, whose names will not always be disclosed due to the danger of possible reprisals.
In the summer of 2021, Team 29 announced the termination of its activities after Roskomnadzor blocked the organization’s website. The Prosecutor General’s Office identified Team 29 with Společnost Svobody Informace, registered in the Czech Republic, which was included in the list of “undesirable organizations” in Russia. Then “Team 29” closed all media projects and deleted the archive of materials.
On November 8, the Ministry of Justice included Ivan Pavlov, Valeria Vetoshkina and three more former employees of Team 29 in the register of media “foreign agents”. Previously, Pavlov was accused of disclosing data from a preliminary investigation (Article 310 of the Criminal Code) in the case of his client journalist and adviser to the head of Roscosmos Ivan Safronov. The lawyer stated that he considers this to be revenge for his principled position on a number of cases that the FSB is investigating.
