Patients with the omicron-strain of coronavirus who returned from South Africa were vaccinated and tolerate the disease easily, told RIA Novosti Director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology Alexander Gintsburg.
“There are no serious cases, they are in the hospital, but there is nothing serious about the clinic. Mild course: patients have been previously immunized, ”he said.
Earlier, specialists from the Gamaleya Center visited the hospital, took swabs from two Russian tourists who arrived from South Africa and isolated a sample of the omicron strain.
According to Gunzburg, it has already been possible to assemble a vaccine design against a new variant of the virus. “It has been done as against all previous strains, but there is no reason to change the vaccine yet,” he said.
On November 26, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated the strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529, found in southern Africa, with the Greek letter omicron. The WHO said in a statement that the species “has a large number of mutations, some of which are of concern.” Later laboratory tests confirmedthat the omicron has learned to get away, if not from all, then from a significant part of the antibodies produced after vaccination or a disease caused by previous variants of SARS-CoV-2.
The world epicenter of the spread of the omicron strain is southern Africa. The largest number of those infected with it was detected in South Africa. The new strain has already been found in more than 50 countries.
On December 10, the Russian government completely closed entry from nine countries in Africa and Hong Kong due to the proliferation of omicron. Even diplomats are banned from entering.
