The Golovinsky District Court of Moscow did not support the petition of the Interior Ministry investigators to choose a preventive measure for Anton Astakhov, the son of Pavel Astakhov, the former Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights, writes Mash. On the court’s decision regarding Astakhov Jr. informs RIA News”. Anton is charged with large-scale fraud, for which he faces 10 years in prison.
According to the investigation, Astakhov Jr. and his partner took control of a certain company, and then issued loans to it and transferred more than 3 billion rubles through the accounts of this legal entity. After that, the suspects launched a VAT refund procedure for about 130 million rubles. The investigators estimated the total damage from the actions of fraudsters at 1.2 billion rubles.
Astakhov’s partner Dmitry Arseev disappeared abroad.
The investigation will appeal against the decision not to send Astakhov under house arrest in the Moscow City Court.
Pavel Astakhov was the children’s ombudsman from 2009 to 2016. At that time, Astakhov’s father and son, according to media reports, were already conducting financial affairs together. So, in 2014, Pavel Astakhov announced the collection of funds for refugee children from Donbass to an account in the Regional Bank, an 8.5% stake in which had previously been acquired by his son. The same bank kept the accounts of the Sevastopol treasury. And in the fall of 2014, the Regional Bank was entrusted with an important role in economic cooperation between Russia and the DPRK, wrote newspaper “Izvestia”.
Anton Astakhov received his education in economics in England and the USA. After graduation, he was an assistant to the children’s ombudsman and reportedly occasionally replaced his father on his travels in Russia, and also worked in structures close to the presidential council on modernization.
In 2012, the name of Anton Astakhov was mentioned in connection with an accident on 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street in Moscow. Then BMW, driven by Astakhov, collided with Toyota Yaris. According to the traffic police, the child’s ombudsman’s son was drunk. He refused a medical examination and was deprived of his rights for 1.5 years.
Pavel Astakhov resigned from the post of children’s ombudsman after a petition for his resignation collected more than 50 thousand signatures. Prior to that, Astakhov had repeatedly found himself in the center of criticism, for example, when he said that in the Caucasus “women are already wrinkled at the age of 27”, supported the so-called “law of scoundrels” (prohibiting foreign adoption of Russian children), as well as when his dissertation turned out plagiarism.
After tragedies on Syamozero Astakhov met with the surviving children and asked them: “Well, why, how did you swim?”
