<p>Republicans in the US Senate have blocked the advancement of the national defense bill for the next fiscal year, demanding sanctions against Russia through Nord Stream 2.  About it <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/583487-senate-gop-blocks-defense-bill-throwing-it-into-limbo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">writes</a> The Hill.</p>
<p>45 senators voted for the bill, 51 against (the document must receive 60 votes to pass in the Senate).</p>
<p>The administration of President Joe Biden is opposed to the sanctions.  A White House spokesman told The Hill that the administration is working &#8220;on a legislative package of sanctions in the event of a further Russian invasion of Ukraine&#8221; that does not alienate European allies.</p>
<p>Earlier, the German government called on Congress not to impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as this would &#8220;harm the transatlantic unity.&#8221;  In Germany, they say that the pipeline does not pose a threat to Ukraine, since the transit of Russian gas to Europe continues through its territory. </p>
