President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko arrived at the transport and logistics center near the Bruzgi checkpoint on the border with Poland, where refugees trying to enter the EU are being kept. Lukashenka said that Belarus will help those migrants who express such a desire to go home. This is their right, but they will not force anyone, the president said, BelTA informs.
“Whoever wants to move in the western direction is also your right. We will not catch and beat you and hold you behind barbed wire, ”Lukashenka said. He added that the Belarusian authorities are ready to do everything for refugees in trouble.
“We, Belarusians, and I, among other things, will do everything as you wish, even if it is bad for Poles, Latvians and someone else,” the president said.
Lukashenko also asked the refugees not to be afraid of the Belarusian border guards. “These are your friends! There is no need to be afraid of them. You can contact them with any request, ”he said.
In mid-November, several thousand migrants from the Middle East, whose movements are controlled by the Belarusian security forces, approached the Bruzgi-Kuznitsa border crossing from the Belarusian side. The migrants made attempts to break into the EU, while throwing stones and sticks at the Polish border guards and police officers. The security forces responded with stun grenades, tear gas and water cannons. In clashes with migrants, at least nine police officers were injured.
On November 19, the State Border Committee of Belarus received an official notification from Poland on the suspension of freight traffic at the Kuznitsa railway checkpoint. Poland introduced the corresponding restrictions on November 21.
In Poland, Belarusian border guards were accused of beatings and intimidation of migrants. Refugees are forced to cross the border and are not allowed to return home.
The EU authorities call this migration crisis “hybrid aggression” by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. They also suggest that Russia is also involved in creating the crisis. Thus, according to the President of Lithuania, illegal migrants arrive in Belarus through Moscow. And political scientist Maria Snegovaya recalled that the Kremlin six years ago successfully tested the tactics of transferring migrants to the borders of Finland and Norway. The situation then returned to normal at the same time as Finland’s refusal to continue the freezing of bilateral relations with the Russian Federation, which began after the annexation of Crimea.
