Three white Americans who chased and then shot and killed a young black while jogging received life sentences. About it informs Vice.
Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael and William Brian were convicted of premeditated murder.
The decision came almost two years after the assassination of Ahmaud Arbury in February 2020. As the newspaper notes, this verdict was a victory for the Americans, who believe that the country’s justice system rarely punishes those who unjustly kill blacks.
The court found that three white Americans were chasing Arbury in pickup trucks, suspecting him of robbing a house, even though the man was just jogging. After 5 minutes of chasing, they squeezed him into a corner, and then shot him with a shotgun.
As the newspaper notes, the verdict was made against the backdrop of the growing Black Lives Matter movement, which arose after the deaths in 2020 of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other blacks unjustly killed by law enforcement agencies. This sparked strong outcry in civil society against police brutality.
