The Prosecutor General’s Office appealed to the Supreme Court with a demand to liquidate International Memorial due to numerous violations of the law on “foreign agents”. About it it says on the website of a human rights organization.
Memorial’s message states that the hearing will take place on November 25 at 11:00.
“We believe that there are no legal grounds for the liquidation of the International Memorial. This is a political decision to destroy the Memorial Society – an organization dealing with the history of political repression and the protection of human rights, ”the human rights organization stressed.
Alexander Cherkasov, chairman of the human rights center Memorial, told The Insider that this decision was expected. “What were you waiting for? A bouquet of flowers, like at a wedding? Unlikely. In our situation, it is rather necessary to throw a wreath every time and see who will catch it and who will be next, ”Cherkasov said.
According to him, the staff of Memorial are now considering the next steps. “We are thinking. The first steps are to think, and we think. Of course, we will appeal everything. How, in what form, based on what – this is the work, and it starts, ”Cherkasov added.
Director of the Sakharov Center Sergei Lukashevsky, in a conversation with The Insider, called the decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office “symbolic.” “The filing of a claim by the General Prosecutor’s Office with the Supreme Court to liquidate the international Memorial is not only absolutely unfair, but, unfortunately, extremely symbolic. It is quite obvious that the organization, which aimed to preserve the memory of political repression in our country and was engaged in the protection of human rights in today’s Russia, is in contradiction with the emerging political realities. A certain symbolic circle is closed. With the current political repression and suppression of free activity, the state cannot put up with either the protection of human rights, or with the preservation of the memory of those times when any manifestation of freedom was suppressed and a person without any manifestations could become a victim of the most severe repressions, be imprisoned for many years in Gulag and shot. The law on foreign agents, the violation of which is imputed to Memorial, was originally created not to inform the public about the sources of funding, but to put pressure on independent public organizations. Today it is obvious that the latest attack on Memorial and a wave of fines on completely far-fetched pretexts was a long preparation for today’s statement. The power structures have the opportunity and time to work for a long time on the preparation of such an operation. Public organizations, even in a situation of pressure, are engaged and engaged in their real business. In the case of Memorial, this is preserving the memory and protecting those whose rights have been violated today, ”Lukashevsky said.
Ministry of Justice introduced Memorial International entered the register of “foreign agents” in October 2016. Since then, the organization has been fined more than 20 times for the lack of the “foreign agent” label. The total amount of fines exceeded 6 million rubles.
