EU Court Rejects Google’s Complaint Over € 2.4 Billion Fines For Antitrust Violations

[ad_1]

The European Court of Justice rejected the appeal of the American IT company Google and ordered to recover 2.4 billion euros from it. informs Euronews. The court considered it proven that the company had been abusing its dominant position in the market.

When analyzing the work of the Google search engine, experts came to the conclusion that in the first places when viewing search results, the user saw the products and projects of the company, and only then the developments of its competitors.

According to the European Union, 95% of clicks are in the top ten positions in the search results, and addresses placed on the second page collect only 1% of clicks. At the same time, the court noted that these violations only concern the market for trade services, and not the entire operation of search engines, as the EU authorities argued.

In determining the amount of the fine, revenues were taken into account by Google from 2008 to 2017 in 13 European countries, including the UK, which at that time was a member of the EU, and Norway (not a member of the EU, but part of the Common European Market) …

The IT giant did not admit his guilt and filed an appeal. The company believes that its services have actually expanded the choice for consumers.

The current judgment is not final and can be appealed.

Litigation continue four years. In the European Court of Justice against Google, two more claims for violation of antitrust laws are pending, and the sanctions total 8 billion euros. In one of the lawsuits featured a record fine of € 4.3 billion. It is nominated for quelling competition with one of the most popular mobile operating systems, Android. Another lawsuit concerns online advertising abuse.

Holding Alphabet Inc., which owns Google, is one of the most valuable companies in the world. Its cost exceeds $ 2 trillion. In 2020, the net profit of Alphabet Inc. exceeded $ 40 billion.
