A group of US senators have come out in favor of an amendment to the US defense budget for fiscal 2022, which provides for sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. informs “Interfax” with reference to the statement of the senators.
“Since the Biden administration refused to impose mandatory congressional sanctions on Nord Stream 2 earlier this year, Russia has cut gas transit through Ukraine and has concentrated troops and military equipment on the Ukrainian border. As long as the administration continues to defy the bipartisan will of Congress, we will continue to promote legislation that protects our allies and interests in Europe, while countering projects of detrimental Kremlin influence, ”the statement said.
The proposed amendment introduces mandatory sanctions against the project operator, Nord Stream 2 AG. The amendments were initiated by Republican Senators Jim Risch, Rob Portman, John Barrazo, Ron Johnson, Tom Cotton and Ted Cruise.
Biden administration earlier this year imposed sanctions against several companies that supported Nord Stream 2, but not against the operator of this project itself.
