Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation has filed a new charge against former President Viktor Yanukovych. In connection with an attempt to suppress Euromaidan in 2014, he is charged with creating an organized criminal group and committing terrorist acts. As a result of the activities of this group, dozens of people died, reported press service of the department.
“The investigator of the State Bureau of Investigation, in agreement with the prosecutor of the office of the Attorney General, this morning, November 5, 2021, reported on the suspicion of the ex-President of Ukraine as the head of an organized criminal group,” the statement says.
According to the investigation, the group included officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Security Service of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “All of them are suspected of committing grave and especially grave criminal offenses during the mass protests that took place in the center of Kiev from 18 to 20 February 2014,” the State Bureau of Investigation noted.
According to the ministry, members of the organized crime group under the leadership of Yanukovych committed “terrorist acts to intimidate the population, which led to grave consequences and death of people,” obstructed protests in Kiev, and also exceeded their authority and official powers.
The investigation established that due to the activities of the criminal group headed by the President, 76 people died during the specified period, more than 800 received bodily injuries of varying severity. The suspects committed murders and attempted murders with the use of firearms and special equipment.
After the protests of 2013-2014, as a result of which Yanukovych fled the country and fled to the territory of the Russian Federation, the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine opened several criminal cases against him and his son Alexander. At the end of January 2019, the Obolonsky District Court of Kiev passed a guilty verdict to the ex-president in the case of treason and in absentia appointed he was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Viktor Yanukovych’s lawyers filed appeals against the verdict. The ex-president of Ukraine himself believes that the verdict has nothing to do with the law, and the trial was a “political order.” He also stated that unprecedented pressure was exerted on the judges in his case.
On October 2, 2020, the Kiev Court of Appeal upheld the verdict on Yanukovych in the high treason case. After that, the ex-president’s defense filed a cassation appeal.
