A lawsuit against the owner of the Russian research vessel Akademik Ioffe, on the basis of which the ship was detained in Denmark, was filed by the Canadian company One Ocean Expeditions Ltd. About it informs TASS.

According to information on the company’s website, One Ocean Expeditions Ltd. deals with individual cruises. In particular, it offers sea voyages in the Arctic, the North Atlantic islands and Svalbard.

The 2019 edition of the Baird Maritime wrotethat the company accused the Russian authorities of hijacking the ships “Akademik Ioffe” and “Akademik Sergei Vavilov” of the same type. The company, in turn, stated that the vessels that were leased to it in 2011 and 2012 were recalled to Kaliningrad “for modernization.” In the 2019-2020 season, the ships had to be removed from the cruise schedule.

The management of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences does not officially comment on this situation.

Previously became knownthat in Denmark, at the roadstead of the port of Skagen, the Russian scientific vessel “Akademik Ioffe”, which is used by the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was arrested. The ship was detained on November 1 and arrested as part of a lawsuit related to its previous work. On board “Akademik Ioffe” there are 38 crew members and 23 scientific workers.

On November 2, the Baltic Federal University in Kaliningrad reported on the completion of the scientific expedition on board Ioffe, which lasted 45 days. Scientists have carried out studies of the deep-sea passages of the Antarctic bottom water in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Such studies allow drawing conclusions about the prospects for global climate change. In August, the ship went on an expedition, then scientists studied the water masses on the shelf and continental slope of the Kara Sea for a month.

The vessel “Akademik Ioffe” was built in 1988 in Finland. The ship is equipped with an emitter of hydroacoustic signals, which can be lowered through the shaft in the hull into the water. The vessel is used for experiments on long-range sound propagation in the ocean. They are carried out for oceanology, but they can also have a military purpose.
