The prosecutor’s office began checking information about prisoners who opened their veins in Kaluga IK-3 due to complaints of beatings and unbearable conditions of detention. About it informs TASS.

What happened in Kaluga on October 23 reported Mediazona citing lawyer Yulia Chvanova. According to the lawyer, about 60 prisoners cut their veins open at the local colony # 3. All of them are kept in punishment cells and cell-type premises due to penalties.

October 24 at the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Kaluga Region statedthat this information is not true. “There were publications in the media that <...> allegedly several dozen convicts committed an act of self-harm. This information is not true. The penal colony is operating normally, ”the department said.

Meanwhile, the wife of one of the injured convicts told Mediazona that a few days ago there was a “Moscow check” in the colony. “[Перед этим] they took away all their personal belongings, warm clothes, and elementary medicines. And someone else was beaten there – that was the last straw. They were on hunger strike for two days, no one paid any attention to them, and they decided to open themselves this evening, ”she said.

She also added that one prisoner who opened his veins was taken to the city hospital.
