In Italy, an investigation has been opened against the former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on the fact of possible obstruction of the disembarkation of migrants from the ship that saved them. About it informs Interfax with reference to the Italian press.
The case is based on the events of August 2019, when Salvini could use his official position in order to keep 147 rescued illegal migrants on a ship at sea and prevent them from disembarking in Italy.
Salvini himself claims that this decision was not his own, but was coordinated with the cabinet of ministers, including with its then head Giuseppe Conte. The prosecution said that Conte, the current Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio were invited as witnesses in this case.
In August 2019, a group of illegal immigrants rescued by members of the ship’s crew of the Spanish non-profit organization Open Arms were not allowed to go ashore in Italy for six days. At the same time, the subsequent inspection of the vessel indicated that all this time people were on it in terrible sanitary conditions.
