One of the leaders of the al-Qaeda terrorist group, Abdul Hamid al-Matar, was killed in a US airstrike in northwestern Syria. About it informs United States Central Command.
The strike was carried out using an MQ-9 Reaper drone near the city of Suluk in the Syrian province of Raqqa. No civilian casualties were reported.
“The removal of this high-ranking al-Qaeda leader will undermine the terrorist organization’s ability to further plan and carry out global attacks that threaten US citizens, our partners and innocent civilians,” the US military said in a statement.
The US indicates that al-Qaeda is using Syrian territory as a haven for reconstruction, coordination with accomplices and planning new operations.
