The Pechersk District Court of Kiev in absentia chose a measure of restraint in the form of detention for the former Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolai Azarov, suspected of committing high treason, according to website State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
“The election of Azarov in absentia in the form of detention will give grounds to apply for international legal assistance on his extradition, and will also initiate the issue of a special pre-trial investigation,” the message says.
At the office of the Attorney General reportthat, according to the investigation, Azarov, acting jointly and by prior conspiracy with the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, in violation of the Constitution and the Law of Ukraine “On International Treaties of Ukraine” signed an order approving the so-called “Kharkiv Agreements”. According to the prosecution, on April 20, 2010, while in Russia, Azarov “agreed to the conditions imposed by the representative of a foreign state – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, to extend the stay of the Russian Black Sea Fleet” in Ukraine for 25 years under the pretext of discounts on gas. From April 21 to April 23, 2010, Azarov ensured the approval of the draft of this agreement and the law of Ukraine on its ratification by ministries, other departments and security forces “without actually considering these documents by authorized bodies.”
“As a result of such actions, preconditions were artificially created for an increase in the number of troops of a foreign state on the territory of Ukraine, the invasion of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and their occupation of the Crimean peninsula,” the Prosecutor General said in a statement. leads Interfax-Ukraine.
A case was initiated against Azarov under Part 2 of Art. 28, part 1 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy).
The RRB notes that Azarov, fully understanding the consequences of the signing of this agreement by Ukraine, deliberately ensured the endorsement and approval of his draft by authorized officials and thus “contributed to the realization of the interests of the Russian Federation at all stages of the approval of the draft Agreement and its implementation”.
The department also stressed that criminal prosecution for committing high treason has no statute of limitations.
