Former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergei Furgal, accused of organizing the murders, signed a protocol on familiarization with the materials of the criminal case. He will also insist on a jury trial, told TASS is one of the lawyers of the ex-official Mikhail Karapetyan.

“Sergei Ivanovich has just signed a protocol on familiarization with the materials of the criminal case. He insists on his innocence and announced that the trial should be held with the participation of a jury, ”said the defense attorney.

The Basmanny District Court of Moscow two weeks ago granted the request of the investigation to restrict Furgal and his defense in terms of familiarization with the materials of the criminal case (until October 15). The case contains 74 volumes.

According to the lawyer, in the near future the case materials will be sent for approval of the indictment to the General Prosecutor’s Office, and then to the court for consideration on the merits.

Earlier, the investigation also asked the court to set a time limit for familiarization with the materials of the criminal case for other defendants: inspector of the security service at Mendeleevo airport in Yuzhno-Kurilsk Marat Kadyrov, ex-assistant to Furgal Andrei Karepov.

The governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, was detained in July last year. According to the investigation, he organized the attempted murder of an entrepreneur and the murder of two more businessmen in 2004-2005. Furgal himself denies guilt and considers the case politically motivated. The criminal prosecution of Sergei Furgal sparked a wave of protests in the Khabarovsk Territory.
