State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded several times undeservedly. He said that there should be a mechanism for revoking the award from “unworthy” laureates.

According to Volodin, the prize was unfairly awarded to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, State Counselor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi, former US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali.

“It is clear that the Nobel Peace Prize has been discredited, – wrote State Duma speaker on his telegram channel. The credibility of it, perhaps, will be able to return the introduction of the procedure for withdrawing the prize in case of revealed facts of crimes, violations against human rights and freedoms. It is unacceptable when people involved in terrible crimes are still its laureates. And those who truly deserve this award do not. Why? Because where there are no clear criteria, there will always be questions. Especially when it comes to decisions of a political nature. “

Nobel Peace Prize for 2021 was awarded Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov; and US-Filipino journalist Maria Ressa on October 8 “for efforts to preserve freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and peace.”

Awarding the award to Muratov caused active discussion – many felt that Alexei Navalny should have received the award. Muratov himself also said that in the place of the Nobel Committee he would give it to the founder of the FBK.
