On the third anniversary of the attack on the Kerch Polytechnic College, local authorities unveiled the They Wanted to Live memorial. It is a shot-through notebook, from which a flock of larks flies out, according to website city administration.
The monument was made according to the sketch of the artist Andrey Kovalchuk from bronze, the height is about 6.5 meters. The authorities decided to erect a memorial at the city cemetery. The granite pedestal reads “They Wanted to Live” and the names of all the victims are listed.
“A punched student notebook that will never be the same. And larks fly into the sky, like the souls of poor dead children. Of course, this is an allegory. In Christianity, the lark symbolizes youth, humility, as it soars high and sings, only aspiring to the sky, ”the author explained his artistic intention.
The attack on the Polytechnic College took place on October 17, 2018. 18-year-old student Vladislav Roslyakov detonated a homemade bomb and shot students and staff with pump-action weapons. As a result, 20 people died. The attacker himself shot himself. In terms of the number of victims, this is the largest mass murder in an educational institution in recent European history.
