A Los Angeles court sentenced American millionaire and real estate tycoon Robert Durst to life on charges of the 2000 murder of his girlfriend Susan Berman. writes The New York Times.
Under California law, those guilty of murder in special circumstances can be sentenced to either death or life imprisonment. The Los Angeles prosecutor’s office did not demand the execution of Durst due to the imposed moratorium on the death penalty. notes CNN.
Earlier in September, a jury ruled that 78-year-old Durst was guilty of a crime. His close acquaintance, Susan Berman, was found in 2000 with a bullet in the head in her house. The woman died shortly before the conversation with the police, which they planned to hold in connection with the case of the disappearance of Durst’s wife Kathleen. The millionaire’s wife disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1982, she was later declared dead.
The millionaire accidentally confessed to the murder while filming an HBO documentary about his life. Going to the bathroom, he, believing that he had already taken off the microphone, said: “Well, that’s all. You got caught. What I’ve done? Killed them all, of course. ” The film crew took this tape to the police.
As the prosecution considered, Durst told Berman that he had killed his wife, after which he decided to get rid of her too. During the investigation, the tycoon got confused in the testimony.
