“The article is written in door slang, which directly indicates the addressee.” Ukrainian political scientists about Medvedev’s column

[ad_1]

Alexey Kovzhun, media analyst

It hardly makes sense to discuss the content of the article. When Medvedev was still interesting, he somehow danced to the song “American boy, I’m leaving with you,” and this had more meaning and content. I am interested in two things, and the first is the addressee. Who is the addressee of this amazing message? The feeling that he is addressing some of the true rulers of the universe. This is such a slander – “Marivanna, I will not meet with him, he calls himself names.” Who is this Marivanna? These are not some Americans, because they are hinting that the Ukrainian government is not independent. This is someone higher, and higher in the universe of Dmitry Medvedev – this is, of course, Putin.

The second interesting part is the vocabulary, and it is outside the scope of documents that are made by serious men in power. This text is beyond the scope of what was accepted in the once respected edition of Kommersant – all these “grandmothers”, “moronic”. This taste of the gateway clearly indicates the addressee.

It is completely incomprehensible why someone Medvedev suddenly argues, why there is no need to meet with the Ukrainian authorities? Is someone waiting for him or inviting him? I have a feeling of what it is like to “ziganitsya a portrait”. He signals that he is ready to return to real adult games, and shows Monsieur Putin who is in charge and that he knows who is in charge. Written in such slang, the editors have clearly blotted out the swear words, because there are not enough of them. The feeling that there are some places where the swear words should be, but they were replaced by euphemisms, from which the text lost some bitingness and this slander ceased to be petty, and just a slander remained – “I will not meet with them.”

Mikhail Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine

It is necessary to separate emotions from facts. Emotions are undoubtedly seething. But with the facts and their interpretation – everything is the same. Total ignorance of modern Ukraine. Misunderstanding of who is who in the political elite here. What real and even rooted sentiments take place in Ukrainian public opinion and, if more broadly, in the national dominant worldview.

In a marvelous article signed by Mr. Medvedev, the fact of disappointment with the results of Russia’s policy towards Ukraine is particularly noteworthy. It is clear that this fact is not stated directly. But it is precisely painful disappointment that permeates the entire text.

For a long time, the Russian leadership made erroneous bets in Ukraine and relied on the expertise of subjects who absolutely inadequately assessed the real state of affairs. Now the situation has definitely reached an impasse – when it turned out that neither information, nor political, nor economic, nor even military instruments work. Instead of building partnerships, a murderous and flawed tactic was chosen to humiliate, subjugate and introduce the formula “suzerain – vassal”, which a priori cannot give a result in Ukraine.

Ukrainian society is not inclined to obey – it is a completely different people who have their own views on the government, on the state and on the future of our region. It’s impossible to ignore. It is also impossible to hide from this in the illusion that some other leadership of Ukraine could direct the Ukrainian people in the other direction or suppress the emotions inherent in Ukrainians.

Undoubtedly, now we can clearly see the feeling of a dead end voiced by certain representatives of Russia. The absence of new creative ideas is clearly visible – how can one get out of this impasse without even greater reputational and moral losses for the Russian Federation. Disappointment and corresponding negative emotions are clearly visible, which cease to be banal, offensive tonality and rude vocabulary. As in the text of Mr. Medvedev. But this cannot be a sign of a strong position – rather, it is high time to talk about the deep confusion of the Russian ruling elites.

The Ukrainian side has made the necessary proposals that can help overcome this disappointment and apathy. Constructive is possible. To do this, it is necessary to abandon the old stereotypes and attempts to build something like the USSR 2.0 in view of their complete futility. The sooner direct negotiations between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia take place on an equal basis, the less negative the current situation will be for Russian politics. Buying someone in Ukraine, making someone your vassal here and waiting for him to solve the tasks set by the Russian leadership will definitely not work.

Konstantin Batozsky, political scientist and head of the Azov Sea Development Agency

We understand the role and place of Dmitry Medvedev in the Russian government. We understand that, having voiced this position, he said aloud what, for one reason or another, Vladimir Putin did not want to say – that Russia considers Vladimir Zelensky a very bad person, which is why they refused the Ukrainian side to hold a meeting, at which Vladimir Zelensky has long been insisted.

This confuses Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s cards a little, because in his ideal world he would like to meet and this makes the negotiation process and the military situation insanely difficult, because the situation at the front is very bad – Ukrainian soldiers die every day and we do not see any gesture to end the war.

As for the perception of this text by the Ukrainian public, it is funny and sounds like this: “Wrote? Well, he would have gone to **.

Evgeny Magda, Director of the Institute of World Politics in Kiev

Mr. Medvedev’s article in Kommersant is the most sharp attack by the Russian leadership against the Ukrainian one in all 30 years of Ukraine’s independence, and in other years too. Thus, Medvedev answered several questions at once.

First, he demonstrated to Mrs. Nuland, who is arriving in Moscow today, that the Kremlin wants to talk with the overlord, not with the vassal – that is, with the United States, not with Ukraine. And this is a fairly clear answer to the desire of Vladimir Zelensky to organize negotiations with Vladimir Putin, and the answer is clear and unambiguous.

The second point is the reaction of the Kremlin and Mr. Medvedev personally, since Viktor Medvedchuk is also his godfather, to the fact that Medvedchuk has been charged with a new charge in Ukraine and he must either pay a bail of 1 mln hryvnia, which is about 3 billion rubles, or he risks to be behind bars. I think that the Kremlin has a prepared decree on Medvedchuk’s Russian citizenship for this case, and there will be nothing surprising. And I think that the Russian authorities are simply blown away by gas prices, and they are ready to speak with Ukraine in the tone of diktat and do it as clearly as possible.

Why Medvedev? On the one hand, this is the former president of Russia, and in one way or another, both in Ukraine and Western diplomats, and not only Western ones, will listen to his voice. On the other hand, Medvedev today is not even among the top twenty Russian politicians. This statement, which is markedly impartial for Zelensky and offensive for Ukraine, to which the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry should respond, will allow the Kremlin to maneuver if something in Ukraine changes before the Kremlin waits.
