35-year-old Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation amid a corruption investigation. About it writes Wiener Zeitung.
Kurtz’s successor as chancellor was the head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Schallenberg. The ex-chancellor himself will remain the head of the Austrian People’s Party.
Earlier, Kurz was accused of being involved in corruption schemes in 2016. The head of the Austrian government and nine other people were suspected of bribery of the media. On 6 October, the Vienna Economic Prosecutor’s Office conducted searches of the Chancellor’s office and the office of the ANP.
Kurz explained the decision to resign by the fact that the Austrian government is currently in a stalemate and cannot pass the budget or agree on tax reform.
Sebastian Kurz has served as Federal Chancellor of Austria since 18 December 2017. He became the youngest head of government in the world. Kurz is known for his pro-Russian views: he called for a phased lifting of sanctions against Russia, his coalition partners signed a cooperation agreement with United Russia, and also talked about the recognition of Crimea as Russian territory.
