On October 7, 2021, the statute of limitations in the murder of Anna Politkovskaya expired, and the ordering parties of the murder have not been identified, informs “New Newspaper”. 15 years have passed since the day of the murder – according to Russian law, after this period, those guilty of a particularly grave crime are released from responsibility.

Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist for Novaya Gazeta, was shot dead at the entrance of her house on Lesnaya Street in Moscow on October 7, 2006. The killer fired four point-blank shots and one control shot to the head. The investigation considers the motive for the crime to be dissatisfaction with the professional activities of Politkovskaya.

There were five people in the dock: Lom-Ali Gaitukayev, his nephews Rustam, Ibrahim and Dzhabrail Makhmudov, as well as Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. Gaitukayev, found guilty of organizing the murder, and the killer Rustam Makhmudov were sentenced to life imprisonment. In July 2017, Gaitukayev died in the colony.

The alleged mediator, former police officer Khadzhikurbanov, received 20 years in prison, and the Makhmudov brothers, who followed Politkovskaya, received 12 and 14 years in prison, respectively. Former Moscow police officer Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, who provided external surveillance of Politkovskaya and transferred information to Gaitukayev for money, was sentenced to 11 years in a strict regime colony.

European Court of Human Rights admittedthat the investigation into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya was carried out improperly, and awarded her relatives 20 thousand euros in compensation. The lawsuit was filed by Politkovskaya’s mother Raisa Mazepa, her sister Elena Kudimova and children Vera and Ilya Politkovsky. The decision of the ECHR says that the Russian authorities “were probably developing one main version, according to which the suspect was a businessman living in London, Boris Berezovsky.” But Russia did not make any requests to other countries in connection with this version.
