The presentation ceremony took place in Potsdam. The M100 Media Award has been awarded since 2005 for contributions to media freedom and freedom of expression, and to strengthening democratic principles. Previous laureates included the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the founder of Médecins Sans Frontières, Bernard Kouchner.
As before reported Deutsche Welle, the organizers of the award noted that by awarding Navalny the M100 Media Award, the Board of Trustees and its chairman, Mayor of Potsdam Mike Schubert emphasize the importance of protecting European values by an independent opposition and civil society, as well as fair justice and human rights. In addition, with this decision, the Prize Council reminds about almost 400 political prisoners in Russia, killed politicians and journalists, as well as the fight against the growth of autocratic tendencies in Europe.
October 1 Alexey Navalny became laureate of the Polish Knight of Freedom Prize awarded by the Casimir Pulaski Foundation.
