North Macedonian diplomat declared persona non grata, stated on Monday at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
On October 4, Chargé d’Affaires of North Macedonia to the Russian Federation, Oliver Chaushevskaya-Dimovskaya, was invited to the Russian Foreign Ministry, where she was handed a note from the ministry declaring an employee of the North Macedonian Embassy in Moscow persona non grata.
As explained on Smolenskaya Square, this measure is a response to the “unfounded decision” made in August by the North Macedonian side to declare the diplomat of the Russian Embassy in Skopje persona non grata.
On August 17, North Macedonian Foreign Minister Buyar Osmani announced that one of the Russian diplomats was ordered to leave the country.
On June 10, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced persona non grata to another employee of the North Macedonian Embassy in Moscow. Then it was also announced that this was a retaliatory measure to the “unjustified decision” to declare the Russian diplomat in Skopje persona non grata on May 18.
On May 20, the Russian left North Macedonia. On the same day, Foreign Minister Buyar Osmani expressed hope that the expulsion of the Russian diplomat from the country would not affect relations between the two states.
Another round of deterioration in diplomatic relations between Russia and a number of EU countries began after Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babish said in mid-April that the Russian special services are suspected involvement in the explosions at the ammunition depot in Vrbetica in 2014. Because of this, Prague expelled 18 Russian diplomats. In response, the Russian Federation declared 20 employees of the Czech embassy in Moscow persona non grata.
On May 8, Babis asked other EU countries to send “at least one” Russian diplomat as a sign of solidarity with Prague.
