<p>Swedish artist and author of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad Lars Vilks and two police officers guarding him were killed on Sunday in a car accident on the E4 highway near the village of Markarud in the Krunoberg province of southern Sweden. <a href="https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/smaland/stor-brand-pa-e4-efter-krock-med-tva-fordon" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">informs</a> TV channel SVT.</p>
<p>The car in which the artist and his guards were traveling collided with a truck on Sunday at 15:30.  After the accident, both cars caught fire.  The truck driver was seriously injured.  He was taken to the hospital and interrogated.</p>
<p>One of the vehicles entered the oncoming lane before the collision.  According to the preliminary version of the police, this could have happened due to a burst tire, fragments of which were found at the scene.</p>
<p>Lars Vilks is the author of the sculpture for the road junction in the shape of a dog with the head of the Prophet Muhammad.  In November 2007, the drawing was published in the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda.  The publication caused outrage among Muslims in many countries of the world.  According to some reports, the fighters of the terrorist network &#8220;Al-Qaeda&#8221; promised to pay a reward of $ 100 thousand for the artist&#8217;s head.</p>
<p>Since then, the cartoonist has lived under police protection.  In July 2010, the Landskrona District Court sentenced two people to two and three years in prison for attempting to set fire to Wilks&#8217; house.  A few days before the arson, the cartoonist was attacked at Uppsala University after a lecture on freedom of expression in art he was giving at the Faculty of Philosophy.  The hackers also hacked into the artist&#8217;s website, <a href="https://tass.ru/obschestvo/12567107" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">transfers</a> TASS.</p>
<p>In March of the same year, a criminal group was arrested in Ireland, preparing an assassination attempt on Wilks.  An American woman, Colin Larouse, who was detained in the United States, was its participant.  In 2020, the court sentenced her to 10 years in prison.</p>
