Since 1950, in France, from 2.9 thousand to 3.2 thousand priests and other Catholic clergymen have been involved in child molestation. About it informs France 24 citing Jean-Marc Sauvet, head of the Independent Commission on Sexual Crimes in the Church (CIASE).
According to him, this is the lowest estimate, and the figures are based on an analysis of church, court and police archives, as well as on testimony received by the commission. Since 1950, more than 115 thousand people have served or worked in Catholic churches.
CIASE was created in 2018 at the request of victims of pedophilia. The commission includes 22 people: historians, sociologists and theologians. The final report of the commission is due on October 5th. In its interim document in March, the commission indicated that about 10,000 children may have been victims of sexual crimes committed by church leaders in France since 1950.
At the same time in March, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of France (CEF) decided to pay compensation to the victims of pedophile clergymen, writes EADaily.
