Professors of the Perm State University Oleg Syromyatnikov were suspended from classes with a group to which he lectured when the shooting began at the university. How informs TASS, citing the press service of the university, this decision was made on the recommendations of the psychologists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Syromyatnikov continues to teach the rest of the groups.
On September 20, during an armed attack on the university, Syromyatnikov gave a lecture on the history of Russian literature in building number 8, where the shooting took place. Edition 59.ru has published excerpts from the audio recording of the lecture. It follows from them that the teacher and students learned that there was a man with a weapon in the building from a woman who entered the auditorium and warned about the shooting. The woman offered to close the door, to which Syromyatnikov replied “Close”, after which he continued his lesson.
“We were in a completely safe situation. Going out into the corridor under unclear circumstances – what is in the corridor, who is in the corridor, what is happening there – would be pointless, stupid and dangerous, ”he later said in a video posted on the Telegram channel Shot.
Syromyatnikov noted that the auditorium in which he lectured was on the fifth floor, while the shooter “did not rise above the second floor.” He added that the door they closed from the inside was metal.
Students criticized Syromyatnikov’s actions. “Perhaps the fact that he continued to lecture should have calmed us down, but it would have been calmer for me if I could just hide under my desk and not think that the material he is telling us should be written down, because ‘studying at more important in any case, “” one of the students told the local newspaper Yo-Media.
Syromyatnikov told 59.ru that he continued the lecture because he did not want panic to start. At PSNIU, commenting on the teacher’s actions drew attention to the fact that he closed the audience from the inside. “Continuing the lecture is also important, it is important to continue some routine action so as not to panic … Of course, not only students, but also teachers experienced stress, but most importantly, he locked himself in,” the university said.
