The Supreme Court of Belarus has liquidated the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the last registered human rights organization in the country. About it informs Belarusian service “Radio Liberty”.
The meeting took place on September 30. The Ministry of Justice accused the human rights organization of gross violation of the law – paying for the work of two observers for the 2020 presidential elections. Human rights activists deny the violation of the law and say that they have not been provided with the original documents confirming the government’s position.
BHC Chairman Oleg Gulak called the decision expected, but noted that human rights work would not stop.
“This was expected, if only because no one has yet won the Justice Ministry’s claim for liquidation, especially recently. This is a political decision in line with the current pressure and persecution, the elimination of civil society structures and the general political context in the country. But we will continue to work on protecting human rights, looking for ways to do it. Monitoring and informing the international community is a very important instrument of human rights work. We cannot stop our work at a time when it is especially necessary, ”said Gulak.
Since mid-July, mass liquidations of human rights, charitable and educational organizations have been taking place throughout Belarus. Their representatives are detained, searches are carried out in their homes and offices, and their accounts are arrested.
On August 27, the Supreme Court of Belarus liquidated the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ).
In February, the security forces came with searches to the leaders of the organization. On July 14, searches were again carried out in the BAJ and in the apartments of its leaders. At the same time, law enforcement officers visited the offices of 23 more organizations.
Searches took place not only in Minsk, but also in Grodno, Brest, Orsha, Borisov, Gomel, Polotsk.
According to the Viasna human rights center, 135 non-governmental organizations have been liquidated in the country over the past three months.
