The population of Turkmenistan is experiencing an acute shortage of bread, which has become the staple food for most residents. Prices for flour products are growing.
In some regions of the country, a loaf of bread went up to 7 manats ($ 2), and the price of a tandoor cake increased from 13 manats to 22 manats (almost $ 6.3), informs Radio Azatlyk. Farmers are already using the emergency supplies of wheat for crops to bake their bread. These seeds are usually coated with chemicals that need to be washed off before threshing.
In order to prevent the mass consumption of sown wheat, law enforcement officers detained several officials responsible for the illegal sale of seeds. An investigation team from Ashgabat has begun checking grain enterprises, sources say.
On the eve of the Independence Day of Turkmenistan, which is celebrated on September 27, subsidized flour arrived in the capital’s state shops for the first time in six months. Although it smelled like mold and contained a lot of bran, the townspeople bought up the goods in 15-20 minutes. According to a local resident, he “went to the store for three days in a row and finally managed to buy 1 kg of flour for 1 manat”. Sellers do not give more than a kilogram to one hand.
The government of Turkmenistan does not recognize problems in the economy, including a shortage of bread. Official reports dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the country’s independence say that the authorities “pay special attention to innovative technologies and know-how,” and also “prioritize the tasks of producing products that replace imported goods and are export-oriented.”
