A Paris court found former French President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of illegally financing his 2012 election campaign. About it informs RIA Novosti from the courtroom.
Sarkozy was sentenced to a year of restriction of freedom, informs French TV channel BFM. He will serve his sentence at home.
Sarkozy did not come to the announcement of the verdict. He is represented in court by his lawyer Thierry Erzog.
The prosecutor’s office demanded that the former French president be sentenced to six months in prison, as well as another six months of probation and a fine of 3,750 euros.
In March, a court found Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence trading and sentenced him to three years in prison, two of which were suspended. He became the first President of France to receive a real prison sentence.
Formerly Sarkozy presented charges of creating a criminal community over Libya’s alleged funding of his 2007 presidential campaign. Sarkozy is suspected of receiving 50 million euros from Libya to finance the 2007 presidential campaign. Then he managed to win.
The main charges against Sarkozy in this case were brought in 2018. He himself categorically denies them.
The scandal over the possible financing of Sarkozy by Gaddafi erupted in the spring of 2012. The French edition of Mediapart published documents stating that the Libyan regime allegedly donated 50 million euros to the French politician’s presidential campaign. Sarkozy filed a lawsuit against Mediapart and called the information published on the portal “a grandiose fake.”
In 2014, France 3 TV released an audio recording of an interview with Gaddafi on March 16, 2011, a few days after France officially recognized the Libyan opposition, which was trying to overthrow the leader of the Jamahiriya. Gaddafi claimed that Sarkozy turned to him for help when he was interior minister, and called the French president “mentally retarded.” However, he did not specify the amount that he ultimately transferred to Sarkozy.
A few months after winning the 2007 presidential election, Sarkozy received Gaddafi at the Elysee Palace. However, in 2011, Paris supported the opposition who opposed the head of Libya. France became one of the initiators of the military operation in the country. On October 20, 2011, Gaddafi was killed by the rebels who captured him.
