A Los Angeles court suspended the father of American singer Britney Spears James Spears from custody of his daughter. He has been her guardian since 2008.
Judge Brenda Penny temporarily transferred control of the singer’s finances to accountant John Zabel. Britney Spears’ manager Jody Montgomery will continue to serve as her temporary guardian. Spears herself did not participate in the hearing, transfers CNN.
The issue of the complete termination of guardianship can be resolved before the end of the year.
Earlier it became known that the singer’s new lawyer Matthew Rosengart filed a motion in Los Angeles demanding to remove the artist’s father, James Spears, from custody of her. In her statement, Rosengart referred to an earlier statement by Britney Spears in court, in which she said she was being forced to work, take lithium and prevented from getting pregnant. According to the defense, these statements prove that custody is detrimental to the singer’s well-being.
The lawyer asked the court to transfer control over the singer’s finances to the auditor Jason Rubin, who previously worked with cases of transferring custody obligations. As the newspaper notes, now Britney Spears’ fortune reaches almost $ 60 million.
Matthew Rosengart became Britney Spears’ attorney in mid-July after a court allowed the singer to hire a guardianship attorney herself. The former attorney-at-law Sam Ingham has represented the artist since 2008. According to Britney Spears, Ingham did not tell her that she could apply to end custody.
In 2008, Britney Spears was declared temporarily incapacitated, her father James Spears became the singer’s guardian. Initially, the guardianship was supposed to last a year, but later the court extended it indefinitely. Without the permission of her father, Britney cannot manage her money, vote, sign documents, drive a car, or get married.
In July, Britney Spears announced that she would not play concerts as long as her life was controlled by her father, James Spears.
