Barbados parliament supports constitutional amendment that removes the country from the rule of the monarch of Great Britain

The Parliament of Barbados has supported the amendment to the Constitution, according to which the monarch of Great Britain will no longer be the head of the country. About it informs agency EFE.

The deputies voted unanimously to amend the main document of the country. Barbados will change from a monarchy to a republic on November 30, the 55th anniversary of independence from Britain.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley said that negotiations on the transition to a republican form of government began more than 20 years ago. She described the initiative as a “simple but functional bill”, since the amendment to the Constitution only implies a change in the status of the state and refusal to submit to Elizabeth II.

Now the country is awaiting presidential elections, they will be scheduled later.

The population of Barbados is about 280 thousand people. The Caribbean country gained independence from Britain in 1966, but retained a formal link with the British monarchy.
