According to representatives of the justice system, she must be brought to trial in the city of Itzehoe, located an hour’s drive from Hamburg. It is noteworthy that the case of a 96-year-old German woman will be considered by a juvenile court, since the age at which she worked in the Stutthof camp in occupied Poland (18-19 years) was considered a teenager.
According to Judge Dominik Gross, Fürchner belongs to the category of surviving Nazi criminals, and is now officially considered a fugitive from justice. The International Committee for the Remembrance of the Victims of Auschwitz said that the escape of the German woman “demonstrates incredible contempt for the rule of law and the survivors.”
Irmgard Fürchner is the first woman in many years to be tried for Nazi crimes. From June 1943 to April 1945, she worked as a typist and personal secretary to the camp chief, Paul-Werner Hoppe. According to the prosecution, the activities of the German woman contributed to the systematic murder of prisoners, since, according to prosecutors, she could not be unaware of the inhuman treatment of prisoners, and lists of prisoners and reports of their massacres passed through her.
Furchner’s lawyers insist that the German woman dealt with ordinary documentation and did not know what was happening behind the redistribution of the commandant’s office. As the BBC notes, during the 1954 trial, in which Irmgard was a witness, she said that Hoppe personally dictated various directives and orders to her, but she did not know about the essence of the work of the camp, on the territory of which there were gas chambers, and also carried out medical experiments on people.
