Alexei Venediktov, one of the main enthusiasts and promoters of electronic voting, has repeatedly warned about such an effect. At the end of August in the program A Hard Day’s Night on the Dozhd TV channel he spoke:
– So, there was a wonderful story in our memory, it was called the incident of President Trump. President Trump urged not to vote by mail in any way, because it is clear that they will replace there. This is understandable.
So how it ended. Of the people who came with their feet, 60% voted for Trump, so you understand, 60%, 40% voted for Biden. But those who voted by mail, Biden got 66% there, and Trump 36%. And he became president, Biden, he is the president of the post office. That’s all.
The same thought, in almost the same words, he repeated a week before the elections in his program “Let’s Observe” on the radio station “Echo of Moscow”.
After the end of the voting Venediktov stated:
– If we talk about counting votes, separately for DEG <remote electronic voting. – The Insider>, I can tell you that there were hacking attempts, they failed. I have no doubts about the DEG – these elections are fair.
In his opinion, apparently, it is possible to distort the results of the DEG only with the help of hacking. However, he said this even before the results for Moscow’s single-mandate constituencies appeared, so there was no need to explain the defeat of all oppositionists, many of whom were leading by an impressive margin. But his comparison with the incident of Trump, who was outraged by the fact that after counting the ballots submitted by mail, he lost leadership in several key states, was taken up by political scientist Kuznetsov.
But there is a significant difference between the Moscow case and the Trump case. In the US presidential elections, the Republicans had an obvious leader, to whose words most of them could not help but listen – Trump himself. In Moscow, the opposition is not united; voters with different political views have different opinion leaders. An attempt at tactically uniting opposition-minded citizens was the “Smart Voting” invented by Alexei Navalny, but Navalny’s team did not call for abandoning electronic voting. Who then played Trump? Alexey Venediktov spoke:
– We know that the United Russia party calls for registration for electronic voting. And the party of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation – the second party – calls not to register. Practically boycott e-voting. What will be the results? – it is clear what the results will be. This is the same story as Biden and Trump.
Indeed, the Communists constantly criticized the idea of the DEG for being opaque, and on July 15, even spent a protest action near the building of the Central Election Commission demanding the abolition of the DEG, as well as a multi-day voting. The “Fair Russia – For Truth” party reacted in the same way to electronic voting. MP from this party Mikhail Emelyanov in early September in an interview with “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” stated:
“We are receiving information that many business leaders are forcibly forcing employees to register and give their codes and keys. Therefore, we believe that this is a field of exclusively administrative resources, where the victory of the ruling party will be ensured. At least voting at polling stations can be traced, there remains evidence in the form of paper ballots. “
Other politicians spoke very differently about electronic voting. Nezavisimaya Gazeta, in the same publication, quotes the leader of the Urban Projects movement Maksim Katz:
“Such a vote is better than none. Of course, questions remain, but we are not against the DEG. Therefore, we will urge you to vote for our candidates on all days in any convenient way. “
There are also the words of the head of the election headquarters of the Yabloko party Grigory Grishin:
“It is pointless to fight online voting, both offline and online – the elections are the same, the main thing is that people make an informed choice. Therefore, we recommend voting on September 19, and how exactly – with paper ballots or on the Internet – people will decide for themselves. “
Logically, if it was about the “Trump effect”, then the results of candidates from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and “Fair Russia” on the DEG would be significantly worse than on voting at polling stations, and the candidates from “Yabloko” and representatives of “City Projects” ”This would not have been observed.
Now let’s look at two Moscow single-mandate constituencies, where, before the publication of the preliminary results of the DEG, Sergey Mitrokhin from Yabloko and Anastasia Bryukhanova from Urban Projects were in the lead (both were supported by Smart Voting). At the time of this writing, the official results have not yet been announced, but Moscow municipal deputy Denis Shenderovich published in Telegram, photos of the DEG protocols, signed by members of the precinct election commission. We present the results of only the leaders of the vote.
