The pages on the CEC website with published election results were protected from automatic data collection. In the source code of the results page, the data on the number of voters is written not in the form of numbers, but in the form of cipher letters. In cryptography, this approach is called “scrambling”.
The use of this technology became known after the CEC website was updated a few days before the start of voting. The results of the last elections are already encrypted, for which noticed analyst Sergey Shpilkin.
Sergei Shpilkin analyzed the source code of the election results page at polling station 511 in Vladivostok and saw that all the numbers about the total number of ballots issued and votes cast for each party were coded in letters. This means that in order to analyze the results of the last elections, it will be necessary not only to collect data from a site that blocks access from one IP address after several requests, but also to decrypt this data.
“I don’t know to what extent one must be afraid of one’s own citizens in order to do this,” wrote Sergei Shpilkin. He added that “we have not yet broken through such a bottom.”
