Google and Apple have removed the Navalny app from the Russian Google Play and App Store stores. About it informs Navalny’s team.
On the eve of the first deputy head of the international committee of the Federation Council, FSB General Vladimir Dzhabarov threatened employees of Google and Apple offices with criminal cases if they did not remove the application, which, among other things, has the Smart Voting function.
“Structures and personalities associated with Apple and Google should be aware that their deliberately illegal actions and criminal inaction after receiving appropriate warnings from Russian officials will inevitably have legal consequences for them, including criminal ones,” Dzhabarov said.
According to him, the presence of the Navalny application on Apple and Google platforms violates Russian electoral legislation.
In a conversation with The Insider, the founder of Roskomsvoboda Stanislav Shakirov stressed that now the reaction of the Western media to the decision of these companies would be interesting.
“Google and Apple are commercial companies that are more interested in the financial component of their activities. The question of what will happen next lies in the plane of the reaction to these actions in relation to the media, even more not Russian, but American. Google and Apple held out all the way and only on the last day of voting did they go on deletion. As a result, everyone who wanted to have already managed to download and see everything. In reality, it is unlikely that companies will consider that they made the wrong decision, but in the future it is clear that they will meet with any states, if this does not affect the value of their shares, their reputation, and so on.
Despite attempts by the authorities to block access to Smart Vote, on September 15, Navalny’s team published Google document with a list of recommended candidates. Exactly 10 minutes after that on the blog of Sergei Sobyanin was published an obvious tracing of “Smart Voting” – a list of candidates recommended by the capital’s mayor. It included, in particular, TV presenter of “Russia 1” Evgeny Popov, artist Dmitry Pevtsov and multiple winner of intellectual TV games Anatoly Wasserman, who, in a conversation with The Insider admitted connection with the firms of “Putin’s chef” Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Navalny’s supporter Leonid Volkov, anticipating the publication of the Smart Voting list, statedthat the team did “everything possible to make recommendations as accurate as possible,” and admitted that the strategy could have made mistakes. “Even if you do not like the recommendation of Smart Voting, even if you think or you are sure that we were mistaken – use it, vote exactly as Smart Voting in your district suggests. <...> We will discuss the mistakes later, now the main thing is to defeat the United Russia party in each particular district, “Volkov emphasized.
After the publication of a Google document with a list of candidates Roskomnadzor started blocking Red Shield VPN service, and at night Google Docs and the Telegram messenger telegra.ph publishing service began to malfunction. In parallel with this, the Smart Voting list appeared on several platforms at once, including GitHub, Wikipedia, Yandex.Disk, iCloud, Tinkoff Bank, Dropbox, SoundCloud and others.
