Apple, without giving any reason, has disabled the Private Node function for Russian users, which allows them to hide their real IP address and encrypt network traffic, similar to VPN. They write about it “Mediazona” and portal iPhones.ru.
The “Private Node” worked for Russians in beta versions of the new operating systems MacOS 12 Monterey and iOS 15. It was reported that the “Private Node” should be part of the paid iCloud Plus feature set.
The function starts to run on iOS 15, but after a few minutes the service sends a notification to the user that he is not available in Russia due to the “current restriction of local legislation.” At the same time, the company did not officially report the shutdown of the function in the territory of the Russian Federation.
Apple has said that Private Node will not operate in Belarus, Egypt, Kazakhstan, China, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Uganda, South Africa and the Philippines due to “restrictions from local regulators.” Russia was not on the list of countries for which the function would be unavailable.
On the eve of the first deputy head of the international committee of the Federation Council, FSB General Vladimir Dzhabarov threatened employees of Google and Apple offices with criminal cases if they did not remove the application, which, among other things, has the Smart Voting function. The next day Google and Apple removed “Navalny” application from the Russian Google Play and App Store stores.
