The Meshchansky District Court of Moscow, at a regular hearing in the case of the Magomedov brothers, decided to close the trial from media representatives and listeners. About it writes “New Newspaper”.
According to the newspaper, judge Olesya Mendeleeva referred to a letter received the day before from the deputy head of the FSB of Russia, head of the counterintelligence department for the credit and financial sphere, Ivan Tkachev. The letter said that the participants in the process – in particular, witnesses – allegedly received “threats of murder, violence against them, destruction or damage to their property in connection with participation in criminal proceedings.” At the same time, the FSB officer did not specify the names of the witnesses, except for one person.
“We are undoubtedly petitioning to close the trial until the end of the hearing,” said prosecutor Boris Neporozhny, who supported the FSB’s request to close the trial during the meeting. At the same time, the defendants and lawyers opposed this decision, citing the fact that the facts of the threats are far-fetched and are a provocation aimed at hiding the process from the public.
Novaya Gazeta emphasizes that the trial of the Magomedov brothers was initially open to both listeners and journalists. However, now operational officers are constantly on duty in the corridors of the court, watching the listeners and lawyers.
According to the defendants, the fact of threats to one of the witnesses, whose name is indicated in Tkachev’s letter, had not previously been confirmed. “This is an artificial closure of the process so that journalists do not write about all the disgrace that is happening here,” the “Novaya Gazeta” quotes the words of the accused Artur Maksidov. Magomed Magomedov’s lawyer, Mikhail Osherov, in a conversation with the publication stressed that such a decision “casts doubt on the objectivity and relentlessness of the proceedings.”
The trial on the merits in the case of the brothers Ziyavudin and Magomed Magomedov has been going on since the spring of this year. At present, as Novaya Gazeta emphasizes, the prosecution is at the stage of presenting evidence.
The Magomedovs are accused of nine episodes of embezzlement – in particular, during the creation of an artificial land plot in the area of Krestovsky Island in St. Petersburg, the preparation of a land plot for the construction of the Baltika stadium in Kaliningrad, the supply of electrical equipment for the Vasileostrovskaya substation in St. GRES ”, reconstruction of the Kaliningrad airport Khrabrovo and others. The Magomedovs deny the charges.
In total, about 20 people are involved in investigations related to the Magomedov brothers, some of whom are wanted and arrested in Russia in absentia.
