The pilots of the Afghan government army, who fled after the Taliban came to power in Uzbekistan, will be transferred to an American base in Qatar. Such agreements were reached between the authorities of the United States and Uzbekistan, writes The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) citing sources.
Before the Taliban seized Kabul, Afghan army pilots hijacked 46 planes and helicopters and flew to Uzbekistan. In total, 585 people fled from the country, including members of the families of military personnel. Among the stolen equipment are Soviet Mi-17s, American Black Hawk helicopters and PC-12 light-engine surveillance aircraft.
Now the pilots with their families will be delivered to the US military base in Doha (Qatar), the sources said. From there they will be sent for permanent residence to other countries (which are unknown). It is not known whether any of the Afghans will end up in the United States. The fate of the stolen military equipment, which is now in Uzbekistan, is also not disclosed.
