A fire alarm went off in the Russian Zvezda module on the International Space Station (ISS) at night. About it informs RIA Novosti, referring to the crew’s negotiations with the Earth, which are broadcast by NASA. Cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky said that the alarm was triggered, the crew sees smoke and smells of burnt plastic. Astronaut Tom Pesce, in turn, said that the smell penetrated from the Russian to the American segment due to the working ventilation.
The devices showed the presence of harmful substances in the area of the medical cabinet.
The astronauts opened panels in the smoke detection area and scanned the space behind them, but did not find a source of ignition. Later, they turned on a filter to clean the station’s atmosphere from harmful impurities.
The press service of Roskosmos said that the smoke did not affect the crew’s plans and they continue to prepare for the spacewalk, which is scheduled for September 9. All systems work normally.
Now the 65th expedition is working on the ISS consisting of Russians Oleg Novitsky and Peter Dubrov, Americans Mark Vande Hai, Shane Kimbrow and Megan MacArthur, Japanese Akihiko Hoshide (station commander) and Frenchman Tom Peske.
