Roman Badanin, founder of the Proekt publication, which was recognized by the Russian authorities as an “undesirable organization”, announced the launch of the Agency publication. The corresponding statement of the journalist was published in the renamed Project Telegram channel.
According to Badanin, the Agency, as well as the Project, will publish investigations. The first such material will be released on September 6, the journalist emphasized.
Ex-journalists of the Project Olga Churakova, Yulia Lukyanova and Petr Manyakhin, as well as ex-journalists of Open Media Maxim Glikin and Yulia Yarosh were recognized as “foreign agents” on July 15 this year. Project Media, Inc., registered in the United States and recognized by the Russian authorities as an “undesirable organization”, was liquidated the next day.
The junk status prohibits an organization from doing business in Russia. For cooperation with an “undesirable” organization (including an unofficial one), there is an administrative penalty: ordinary citizens – a fine of up to 15 thousand rubles, officials – up to 50 thousand, organizations – up to 100 thousand. Criminal proceedings can be initiated for multiple violations. For financing an “undesirable” organization, punishment is imposed from 1 to 5 years in a penal colony, and for organizing activities in Russia – from 2 to 6 years in a penal colony.
The editor-in-chief of the “Project” Roman Badanin is in the status of a suspect in a criminal libel case. At the end of June, the newspaper’s journalists were searched, and later the journalist left for the United States.
