Employees of the Maritime Rescue Service of Spain found 208 illegal migrants in the sea, trying to get to the territory of the country. About it informs Associated Press.
Two caravans of migrants in inflatable boats have found Spanish patrol ships. One had 106 people, including 44 women and 20 minors. They sailed across the Atlantic towards the Canary Islands. Another group of 102 illegal immigrants in four boats tried to cross the Mediterranean Sea to the southern coast of Spain.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country, in January – August 2021, an increase in illegal migration was recorded by 49% compared to the same period last year. In total, 20,491 people have arrived in the country since the beginning of the year, most of them by sea.
The International Organization for Migration reported that this year, approximately 500 illegal immigrants have died or gone missing while trying to reach the coast of Spain. Immigrant aid groups believe that in reality this number is much higher, because some of the shipwrecks are not recorded.
