Let us remind you that on August 23, the Moscow mayor’s office refused the trade union of journalists to hold a rally against the recognition of the media as foreign agents. The organizers planned to hold the event on September 3. The city authorities argued their decision with antiquated measures. The event was to be attended by up to 500 people.
However, earlier today at Chistye Prudy in Moscow, the action passed the form of meeting of candidates for State Duma deputies with voters. The organizers of the meeting proposed amendments to the law on foreign media agents and promised to achieve their adoption if they were elected to the State Duma. The police did not interfere with the rally. The meeting was attended by candidates for State Duma deputies from Yabloko Kirill Goncharov, Nikolai Kavkazsky, Roman Kiselev, Marina Litvinovich, Mikhail Lobanov, Sergei Mitrokhin, Alena Popova, candidate from the Party of Growth Elvira Vikhareva and the Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers.
On August 21, in Moscow, near the FSB building on Lubyanka, single pickets were held in support of the media and journalists recognized as foreign agents. The police detained The Bell correspondent Yulia Starostina, creator of the Norm podcast Daria Cherkudinova, Dozhd journalist Ksenia Mironova, Ilya Vasyunin from RT, Takikh Dela editor Larisa Zhukova and journalist Sophia Groisman (included in the list of foreign media agents). All were later released.
The list of media and journalists considered by the authorities to be foreign agents has been regularly updated since spring 2021. Foreign agents were Meduza, First Anti-Corruption Media, VTimes, The Insider, Important Stories, Dozhd and the Fourth Sector project, as well as 20 journalists. The same list includes Open Media and MBH Media, which stopped working after blocking access to the websites of publications from the territory of Russia.
