The number of people infected with coronavirus in the world increased in August by about 20 million. This is a quarter more than in July (15.4 million), and is the second highest figure for a pandemic. informs TASS. The maximum infections were recorded in April, when the coronavirus was detected in more than 22 million people on the planet.

The rate of infection spread over the month increased sharply in North America and parts of Asia. The incidence in several European countries is also high. The situation is worsening both in countries where quarantine has been maintained for a long time, and where strict restrictions have not been introduced.

At the same time, mortality, which in the middle of summer decreased by almost a third, rose again in August – about 300 thousand people died in a month due to coronavirus in the world.

About a quarter of all infected – 4.5 million – are in the United States. The incidence, despite the high rates of vaccination, began to rise in the country from the end of July. Now about 170-180 thousand new cases of COVID-19 are registered there per day. Against this background, mortality is also growing: if at the end of July about 500 Americans died from the coronavirus, now there are already about 1.5 thousand.

In the UK, about 0.9 million people were infected in a month. This is the highest figure in Europe. The situation in the country began to deteriorate since the beginning of the summer. In mid-July, daily rates exceeded 50 thousand infected. Now the incidence is kept at about 35 thousand.

In Iran, as in India, 1.1 million people were diagnosed with COVID-19 in August. In the Islamic Republic, a new wave of the epidemic began at the end of June and peaked in mid-August at 50,000 infections per day. By the end of the month, the figures dropped to 30 thousand.

In India, for almost two months, about 40 thousand infected people were detected daily, and in the last week of August their number exceeded 50 thousand.

In both Asian countries, the death rate from COVID-19 is at the level of 500 deaths per day.

In Russia, according to official statistics, mortality from coronavirus is higher. True, Rosstat led only data for July. Of these, it followed that 50 421 people with coronavirus infection died in the country in a month. This is 1.8 times more than in June.

In total, 6,975,174 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the Russian Federation, and over 185 thousand residents of Russia died from infection during the entire period of the pandemic.

Around 220 million people have been infected with the coronavirus worldwide. More than 4.5 million of them died, informs Worldometers.
