Director of the National Museum elected as the new President of Estonia

The head of the Estonian National Museum, Alar Karis, was elected President of the Republic, reported on the website of the parliament.

72 out of 101 deputies voted for his candidacy in the second round. In the first round the day before, on August 30, Karis gained 63 votes against 68 necessary to pass. He was the only candidate for the post of President of Estonia, clarifies ERR agency.

Karis will take office on October 11. The duties of the head of state will continue to be fulfilled by the incumbent President Kersti Kaljulaid. She became the first woman to hold this post in Estonian history. In mid-August, she did not rule outthat will put forward his candidacy in the presidential elections this year.

Karis was born on March 26, 1958, he is 63 years old. From 2003-2007 he was the rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, and from 2007 to 2012 he was the rector of the University of Tartu. Since 2017, he has been the director of the Estonian National Museum.
