The Sea Bird vessel, en route from Ukraine to Tunisia with 7 thousand tons of wheat on board, sank in the southern part of the Aegean Sea, east of the Peloponnese peninsula (Greece), informs Maritime Bulletin. All 16 crew members were found and rescued. They are citizens of Syria.
The dry cargo ship went under water on the morning of August 28 after a collision off the Karavi Island. “Judging by the positions of the vessels and (their) trajectories in the area, the Sea Bird probably collided with the cargo ship Haya, which as of 06:20 UTC on 28 August is drifting north of the alleged collision site,” the publication said.
The last signal was given by Sea Bird at 00:20 UTC.
The rescue operation involved two patrol boats from the Greek Coast Guard, five ships and a naval helicopter, writes Parallaxi Magazine. Also, three special boats with equipment for cleaning the sea from pollution were sent to the site of the shipwreck.
The sunken dry cargo ship was built in 1985 and flew under the flag of Togo. The vessel was serviced by GMZ Ship Management Co SA and owned by the Liberian company Lovely Corporation, reported in the “Water Transport” database.
