The total area of the reap is almost 6,000 hectares. On the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the Republic of Mordovia, an interregional emergency regime with a federal level of response has been introduced.

A forest in the Mordovian nature reserve caught fire on August 3. Windy weather, hard-to-reach terrain and dead wood prevent fire elimination. Due to the gusty wind, the fire spread to the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region and approached the closed city of Sarov, in which the Russian Federal Nuclear Center is located.

For extinguishing from the air, Mi-8 helicopters and Il-76 aircraft are involved.
