The Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case against unidentified persons under the article “Ecocide” for the construction of a dam in the Kherson region of Ukraine, which blocked the flow of water from the Dnieper to the Crimea.
How it says on the website of the department, unidentified persons “located on the territory of Ukraine and opposing the reunification of Crimea with Russia” decided to harm the economy and ecology of Crimea.
The construction of the dam, according to the Investigative Committee, caused “depletion of agricultural land.” In addition, over the past six years, the salinity of the Sivash reservoir, located between the mainland and the peninsula, has tripled. The number of animal species has decreased, including those from the Red Book, added to the UK. What kind of animals we are talking about will not be specified.
How notes “Mediazona”, previously no criminal cases under the article on “ecocide” were reported in Russia.
Ukraine provided up to 85% of Crimea’s needs for fresh water through the North Crimean Canal, which connects the main channel of the Dnieper with the peninsula. The supplies were stopped after the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
Water in many settlements began to be supplied according to the schedule, during the driest periods, literally for several hours a day, in the morning and in the evening.
In the spring of this year, the first deputy chairman of the State Council of Crimea, Efim Fiks, spoke about the preparation of a lawsuit against Ukraine regarding the “water blockade”. According to him, the documented direct damage amounted to 1.5 trillion rubles.
In July, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office filed a complaint against Ukraine with the European Court of Human Rights. The ECtHR rejected the request. The UN monitoring mission insists that, given the annexation of the Crimean peninsula, Russia bears the primary responsibility for ensuring access to water for the Crimean population, informs “Crimea. Realities”.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal wrote on Facebook that Kiev does not have the technical ability to supply water to Crimea until it returns to Ukraine.
